Silver Electric Double Caravan Step

Stepping in and out of the van shouldn't be a scramble, and it shouldn't mean bending down to drag a heavy step in and out every time you stop. This Silver Electric Double Caravan Step does the work for you. At the flick of a switch, or automatically as your door opens, two wide treads slide out and drop into place. When you're ready to pack up, they retract flush against the chassis, out of the way and out of the weather.

The silver aluminium treads give it a clean, modern look that sits nicely under a white or light-coloured van, and the ribbed surface gives you solid grip in the wet or the dry. Underneath, the frame is powder-coated steel, so it stands up to gravel roads, salt air and the general knocks of life on the road.

Two steps, less climb

A single step can leave a big gap between the ground and your doorway, especially on a lifted van or a caravan with a high floor. The double tread splits that climb into two manageable stages, which makes a real difference for kids, older travellers and anyone carrying a load in both hands. Each tread is wide enough to plant a full foot on, so you're not tiptoeing on the edge.

Automatic or manual, your choice

Wire it to the supplied door sensor and the step extends the moment you open the door, then retracts when you close it. Prefer to run it yourself? The included rocker switch lets you extend and retract it whenever you like. Plenty of owners run both, the sensor for everyday use and the switch for when they want the step to stay put while the door's open.

Built to handle the load

The 12V DC motor draws 45W and is rated to move a static load of 200kg, so it carries adults and gear without complaint. It runs off your van's 12V system, so there's no need for mains power or a separate battery setup.

What you're getting

This is the powered version of our popular Manual Double Caravan Step. If you'd rather pull the step out by hand and save a bit, that manual model is a solid pick. If you want the convenience of a step that appears and disappears on its own, this electric version is the one. It pairs well with a solid grab handle beside the door for extra support on the way up.

Everything you need to fit it is in the box, including the mounting bolts, the wiring harness with an inline fuse, the door sensor and the rocker switch. It bolts up to a flat section of chassis under the doorway, and the wiring runs into your 12V supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this step fit my caravan?

It suits a wide range of caravans and motorhomes, but it isn't a fit-anything step. Measure where you want it to go and check it against the drawings first. As a guide it's about 540 mm wide, reaches around 693 mm when open, and folds to about 371 mm out by 280 mm high. You'll also need somewhere to run the 12V wiring. If you're not sure, send us a message and we'll help.

Is it 12V?

Yes. It runs off your caravan's 12V DC system and draws a rated 45W. It comes with the wiring harness and a 20A fuse to protect the circuit.

Does it come out on its own when I open the door?

It does. There's a door sensor supplied, so the step extends when you open the door and retracts when you close it. There's also a rocker switch, so you can put it out or bring it in whenever you like without using the door.

What happens if I lose power or the motor stops?

You can retract the step by hand. That way you're never left with the steps hanging out when it's time to pack up and drive off.

How much weight can it hold?

It's rated to a maximum static load of 200 kg, so there's plenty of room for adults and gear. Step on and off steadily rather than jumping onto it.

What's it made of?

The treads are aluminium with a ribbed non-slip surface, and the folding frame is steel finished in powder-coated black.

Do I need an auto electrician to fit it?

Because it wires into your 12V system and uses a door sensor, we recommend having it fitted by an auto electrician or a caravan technician. They'll mount it to a solid point, run the wiring with the fuse in place, and set up the sensor properly.

What fuse does it use?

A 20A fuse, which is supplied. It protects the circuit and should always be in place when the step is wired in.

What are the open and folded sizes?

Open, it reaches about 693 mm out with a total drop of roughly 324 mm across the two treads. Folded, it's about 371 mm out and 280 mm high, and the overall width is around 540 mm. The dimension drawings in the images show the lot.

Can I drive with the steps out?

No. Always make sure the steps are fully retracted before you move the van. With the door sensor set up they'll pull in when you close the door, and you can double-check with the switch.

How do I choose between an electric and a manual step?

An electric step saves you bending down every time, and the door sensor means it's ready when you are. A manual step is simpler and has nothing to wire in. If you'd prefer to keep it basic, take a look at our manual double caravan step.

Does it need much maintenance?

Not really. Rinse off dust and salt after trips, keep the moving joints clean, and check the mounting bolts and wiring connections now and then. That's about it.

Are the treads slippery when wet?

The aluminium treads have a ribbed non-slip surface, so you keep grip in the rain, in the dark or with muddy boots.

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes, it's backed by a 1-year RV Essentials warranty.
